Millburn-Short Hills

Millburn Township with a population of roughly 20,000, is located 20 miles west of New York City, less than 45 minutes away via the Midtown Direct and Hoboken Train lines.  The township was named "Millburn" in 1857, as a tribute to a local mill built on a stream, with "burn" being the Scottish name for "stream."  Shortly after 1870, Stewart Hartshorn, inventor of the roller window shade, decided to make his home here and to enter the real estate business to establish an "ideal community."  He purchased and resold much of the "short hills" area and adopted the Indians' name for his community.  The area now referred to as Short Hills has a separate zip code but remains part of Millburn Township.

Millburn-Short Hills is renowned for it’s top ranked public school system, proximity to New York City and stately homes on winding tree-lined streets.  The school district is made up of five elementary schools, a middle school with grades six through eight and a four-year high school.  There are two train stations within the Township, one in Millburn and one in Short Hills.  Many neighborhoods like the Glenwood and South Mountain sections are desirable because they are within blocks of the stations making commuting a breeze.  Houses within the township vary from condos and smaller starter homes to larger estates on generous sized properties.

Area attractions include the 2,000 square mile South Mountain Reservation, half of which lies within the Township, the famous Mall at Short Hills, the Papermill Playhouse, a professional theater group, and the Cora Hartshorn Arboretum and Bird Sanctuary.  Nearby Drew University, historical Morristown, South Orange Performing Arts Center and the NJ Performing Arts Center in downtown Newark also provide a diverse array of art and cultural activities.  There are also several public and private golf courses in the area for all levels of players.
